    Burglars loot Rs 60K, gold from Kovilpatti church

    A church at Ettunayakanpatti near Kovilpatti was looted on Saturday night even as a festival is on at the religious institution. Burglars stole nearly 20 sovereigns of gold and cash to the tune of Rs 60,000.

    The St Micheal’s Church festival commenced on September 20 and a large number of people thronged the church on Saturday to offer special prayers. 

    Late in the night a worker took the keys of the church to open it for installing speakers and mike for the Sunday prayers. He found the door already open. Shocked by it, he immediately informed the church authorities about it. They rushed to see what happened to the gold jewels worn around the statue of St Micheal. To their dismay they found it missing and they informed the police. During the investigation the Church authorities informed Police that a gold crown and nine chains totalling 100 sovereigns were missing. Immediately the police started searching the premises and found the jewels lying in a corner. 

    When the recovered jewels were tallied the total burgled jewels were estimated at 20 sovereigns. Following that a case was registered at Koppampatti Police Station and they are in search of the burglars. 

    Thoothukudi SP Ashwin Kotnis confirmed the volume of gold burgled and claimed that the role of an insider is suspected in the incident. 

    Similarly, in an another burglary incident at Madurai, gold and cash were burgled from the house of one Alexander, at Valar Nagar. He had gone to attend the funeral of one of his uncles at Pudukottai and returned on Saturday. When he visited the house he was shocked to see the front door of the house broken and 20 sovereigns of gold, bike and Rs 24,000 in cash missing.
