Artist C Dakshinamoorthy passes away at 74
C Dakshinamoorthy, who was instrumental in the Madras Art Movement of the early 60s that reshaped South Indian art, died on Friday. He was 74 and is survived by a son and daughter. He was a founding member of the Cholamandal Artists’ Village under the tutelage of KCS Paniker.

Known for his distinctive style in painting, sculpting and print-making, the artist was born in Gudiyatham in Vellore district in 1943. He joined the Government College of Arts and Crafts in 1960 and KCS Paniker was the principal. When Paniker started Cholamandal Artists’ Village in 1966, Dakshinamoorthy joined him as one of the earliest members.Â
Later, he taught at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Chennai, and became the head of the ceramics department. His unique style brought together elements of visual aesthetics from African sculptures and the figures of Ayyanar.
