The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) officials say that they would inspect places to find out new routes, after which a blueprint would be prepared to operate these additional small buses.

According to the officials, the state launched 50 small buses in Chennai in 2013 to connect areas, which lacked proper transportation facilities. The small buses are helpful in connecting interior areas with nearby bus stands and railway stations. Subsequently, the government gradually operated more such small buses in the suburbs.

Welcoming the announcement P Viswanathan, a road-safety activist and convener, Chitlapakkam Residents Association Coordination Committee, says “It is good news. Such announcements will increase residents’ belief in an effective public transport system. However, several commuters depend on autos paying steep rates. The officials must consider operating the additional buses after careful planning of the routes.”

A senior MTC official says “We have been receiving a flurry of requests from the suburbs we will inspect those areas, after which the new buses will be operated.” Existing routes too will get additional buses, the official adds.
