Reeling out statistics and making a comparative statement on the law and order situation in the last five years, vis-a-vis the previous DMK regime, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday said incidents of crime and murder have come down in the state thanks to steps by the police department during her rule.
Replying to the debate on the demand for grants for police and fire services and rescue departments in the Assembly, she also listed out various incidents that took place during the DMK regime and how the law and order had deteriorated at that time.
She said in 2005, during the end of her then regime, the number of murders in the State was 1,336. But it went up to 1,715 during the DMK regime in 2010 and in 2015 during the AIADMK government, it has come down to 1,641. She said that murders for gain which stood at 74 in 2005, 153 in 2010, has also come down to 107 in 2015.
Pointing out that of the 1,641 murders in 2015, she said “Only a few murders have taken place due to revenge, rowdyism and for gain.” “But still, they are taking continuous steps to prevent incidents of crimes,” she said.
Jayalalithaa dares Karunanidhi for live debate
Lambasting the Opposition for abstaining from the House, Jayalalithaa, replying to the debate on demands for grants for the Home department, referred to Stalin’s offer of apology made to the Speaker last week and said the 79 DMK members were suspended for creating a ruckus in the House, but they have been trying to mislead people into believing that the suspension was ordered to prevent their participation in the Police department debate.
“If they were sincere about participating in the debate, the 10 non-suspended members should have attended the proceedings today. But they came and staged a walkout. Do they not know how to speak?” she asked. Recalling that she had attended the house single-handedly and participated in the debate on Governor’s address in 2006, Jayalalithaa sought to know, if “the DMK President has the guts? Does the present LoP, who claims to be the future leader, have the guts?”
“Karunanidhi did not participate, because he knows that the House will discuss the law and order breakdown in the DMK regime. Even their non-suspended members boycotted the House because they do not have answers for it,” she added.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Chief Minister on Monday made announcements running to the tune of Rs 193.32 crore, which also includes 100 bulletproof jackets worth Rs 60 lakh for police.
