Originally slated to begin on January 8 this year, the annual event was postponed by the organisers, Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI), after the floods damaged many books of publishers.
This is the first time since 1976 the book fair is being conducted in June and not in January when it is usually organised.
KS Pugalendi, secretary of BAPASI, said that crores of books would be displayed in over 700 stalls during the event that would conclude on June 13.
“We will also be organising daily events in the stall named after late President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, where children will be encouraged to show their talents in various fields such as arts and the making of short films,” he said.
The organisers are expecting over 10 lakh footfalls during the 13-day event and anticipating a turnover of Rs 15 crore. Textile industrialist and philanthropist Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti will inaugurate the event at 6 pm and awards will be given to various publishers and writers during the inaugural event.
Starting from June 2, the Chennai Book Fair will observe different themes on each day like Media Day, Chennai Day, Women’s Day, Folk Artists’ Day, and special programmes will be conducted. There will also be new book launches.
