19 law students get 3-yr jail for campus violence
Out of 41 students booked for the bloodbath that transpired at the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law College in 2008, as many as 19 of them have been sentenced to undergo three years in prison and pay a fine of Rs. 15,000 each. The remaining 22 students have been acquitted.

Additional Sessions Judge Gomathi Nagyagam, who heard the case found the 19 students guilty of inciting violence and sentenced them to undergo imprisonment as well as pay a fine. She also convicted two other students from the other group to undergo a similar punishment.Â
On November 12, 2008 two groups of armed students attacked each other with deadly weapons on an examination day. The clash reportedly took place between students of Thevar and Scheduled caste communities.
The issue had also brought into sharp focus the inaction of the police when the clash took place within the campus. In fact, the Supreme court had asked the Tamil Nadu Government to produce the enquiry reports against police officials who had remained mute spectators during the incident.
