Pan-Asian food gets a funky twist

Once you enter the eatery, the space is beaming with light and bright colours, natural forms of wood, metal and threads intertwined with graphic art that takes you straight to the world of Japanese Manga comics.

The interiors of Mamagoto is bright and colourful

    Chennai

The vibrant interiors set the tone for a casual and fun eating with family and friends. Founded in January 2010 in Delhi by Rahul Khanna and Kabir Suri, this is ninth café by the duo, that also has presence in Gurgaon, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

The menu lists street food favourites from China, Japan, Korea and South East Asian countries such as Burma, Indonesia and Malaysia. The chefs add their own spin to the mundane dishes. We started with Thai Chicken and Water Chestnut Salad, that was refreshing and had a sweet-sour tinge, making it an ideal meal starter. This was followed by a host of appetisers like the rock shrimp tempura, crispy and well made with a creamy dip to go along with it. But keep enough space in your tummy to try out their dumplings — both vegetarian and non-vegetarian varieties. The café has aced the practice of having paper-thin skin filled with flavoured meat and veggies. One can just not have enough of them. We would recommend the street style dumpling chicken, traditional vegetarian and chicken Peking dumplings.

To start gorging on the generous portions of their main course, do not forget to wash down the starters with either a fresh Coco-Orange served in a coconut shell or the immensely refreshing Watermelon Beach. The beverages act as great palate cleansers. For the main course, try out the spicy Bangkok bowl chicken that has an omelette, fried chicken and prawns and flavoured rice. If you are looking for something light, the Hunan grilled basa fish served with cucumber, spinach and sticky rice is a great option. For the vegetarians, although there are much more choices than most Asian eateries in town; the dishes are not as exciting as the non-veg counterparts.

If you have the urge to skip desserts at Mamagoto simply because you think they might not be that great or you are too full, we advise you against it. Their desserts are mesmerising. We tried the chunky caramel sponge cake served with rich toffee sauce and the eggless banoffee pie. They were sinful and delicious. An apt end to a sumptuous meal.
