Senior surgeons save two tiny tots:remove tumours from liver

The kids, Abdul Hameed (three-and-a-half years) from Vellore district and Ganesh Kumar, a one-and-half year old baby from Pudukottai district, were admitted to the 

hospital with complaints of pain and bloating of abdomen a few weeks ago.

Talking to mediapersons at the hospital today, Dr R Senthilnathan, HOD Pediatric surgery, who headed the surgical team, said medical investigation of both the kids 

revealed cancerous liver tumor which were growing rapidly in the abdomen.

Stating that liver tumours wee highly malignant tumours and grow rapidly in the main organ and spread to other areas in a short time, he said both the children were subjected to multi-modality treatment of chemotherapy followed by liver resection and were doing well now, with the liver started regenerating. 

The challenge to the paediatric surgical team was to establish the diagnosis of malignancy and contain the growth of tumor and subject the children to a major surgical procedure of removing the tumor along with a portion of liver.

He said both the children were beneficiaries of the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, College Dean Dr Issac Christian Moses said.
