It all began when parents of some students of the Mylapore based Raphael and Montfort Higher Secondary Schools were informed over phone by an anonymous caller  that bombs were placed on the institution premises and they would go off any time.

Parents, who were gripped by panic after the call, immediately rushed to the schools and demanded that their children be sent back with them.

On information from the management, a bomb detection unit headed by Mylapore Inspector Sam Vincent rushed to the spot and conducted a thorough check of both the schools after which the call turned out to be a hoax.

Meanwhile, word spread to 13 other schools in the vicinity forcing parents to rush to the schools and pick up their wards. Following this, the schools were forced to declare a holiday. Though police announced over the public address system  that the threat was a hoax, it  failed to have any effect on the parents.

Even some schools on the ECR (East Coast Road) declared a holiday after  parents wanted to take their wards home to safety. Schools in Neelankarai, Kottivakkam and Kovalam also on the East Coast Road declared a holiday.

Though the threat eventually  proved to be a hoax,  police  swung into action and alerted the  public through the social media  and  through scrolls  on TV asking them  not to believe in rumours and that stern action would be taken against those spreading such rumours.

While Police Commissioner TK Rajendran ordered stern action against the culprits, a case was registered by the Mylapore police as the problem surfaced there initially. A special team has been formed to nab the culprit who is suspected to be from Kalpakkam.
