Central flood relief team to revisit Tamil Nadu
A flood relief team from the Central government is expected to arrive in Chennai on Tuesday on a two-day visit, according to Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa

In a release, she said that it would be the same team which visited the state at the height of flood fury in December last when Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts were badly affected. Following the havoc, the Central government dubbed it a “calamity of severe nature,” resulting in the state government requesting Rs.25, 912.45 crore from the Centre as flood relief.
Stating that 450 people were killed in Tamil Nadu between October 1 and December 31 by lightning strikes, drowning, wall collapses and electrocution, she said that the government had given the next of kin Rs 4 lakh each. Nearly 25.48 lakh houses were inundated by the floods, details of 14 lakh houses had been computerised and they would be paid relief immediately through their bank accounts, she said. Others would be provided relief before January 11, she added.
A total of Rs.7.78 crore would shortly be as paid as compensation for the death of 3785 cows, 8163 goats, 109 pigs and 85, 895 chicken. Similarly, 68,350 farmers would be paid Rs.29.48 crore as compensation for the loss of agricultural crops in 3.47 lakh Ha and 35, 471 Ha of horticultural land shortly, she added.
The government had also paid compensation of Rs.12.82 crore for four fully damaged and 42 partly damaged mechanised vessels, 65 fully damaged and 654 partly damaged country boats, 20 fully damaged and 231 party damaged catamarans, 8,101 nets, 3,047 equipment and 130.90 Ha of fish seed farm, she ended.
