In the first phase, the drive will be carried out in the facilities located in Chennai region. Testing and calibration of medical equipment ensures accuracy, effectiveness and long life for equipment enables achievement of the highest degree of quality. Systematic and periodic check of test and measuring instruments is essential for reliable measurement and diagnosis.

Speaking to this newspaper, Prof K Sankaran, coordinator of NHHID and director of the Centre with Potential for Excellence in Environmental Science at Anna University, said that hospitals have thousands of devices, which need to be tested and calibrated for precision and accurate results.

“In the initial phase, we will cover Chennai region and later to other districts in the State, which will also be done in a phased manner,” he said.

The hub has also inked an MoU with the state health department this year to collaborate for research and development and training programmes for doctors and engineers. The medical devices that the national hub would calibrate in hospitals include, patient monitoring systems, Pulse Oximeters, ECG machines, ventilators, electrosurgical devices, defibrillators in addition to biomedical services.
