PWD to map master project to preserve lake water
As the monsoon filled all water-bodies in abundance, the Public Works Department (Water Resources Department) proposes to protect them by formulating a master plan.

PWD officials say they are in the process of charting a blue print and would soon start work like erecting fences and construction of ramparts along the lakes in Chennai. PWD sources said there are around 13 lakes in and around the city and all were full. They added that though water level was better than previous years, it gave PWD officials a harrowing time to prevent breaches during rain. “It is a fact that all the water-bodies have abundant water which will surely add impetus to supply drinking water without scarcity for a long time. But, it is paramount that we store water properly. So, PWD (WRD) is very keen on this matter and are preparing a master plan,” says M. Bakthavatchalam, SE, PWD, Palar Basin Circle, Chennai. The project would include fencing at some points, strengthening of banks, preventing effluents from mixing with water and construction of ramparts along lakes. Lakes are now inspected continuously.
When dt NEXT asked the project’s estimate, he replied that they were yet to finalise everything. “However, as it is a very big project, the cost will also be high,” he predicted. In a sense, PWD’s move is significant due to the fact that many water-bodies had breaches during the monsoon leading to water wastage and flooding. “Fencing and ramparts along water bodies are necessary to prevent water pollution as the public throw garbage and other waste into the lakes,” said another official, requesting anonymity hoping that such a move would bear fruition and ensure better water management.
Meanwhile, activists have welcomed the move. “As all water-bodies are almost full, we have to ensure that not a drop is wasted,” says MP Duraisamy, a TN PWD Retired Engineers Association member.
