Tamil Nadu Congress president EVKS Elangovan has said that the relief measures and compensation provided to the rain-affected districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore should be enhanced.

He said there were many issues related to the vehicle repair camps now being held in these districts and added that the service offered at these camps were unsatisfactory and often led to customers picking up fights with camp managers. He added that only water service was provided free of cost at these camps and all other services were billed.

He also suggested that the Regional Transport Offices should certify whether a vehicle was fit to be compensated for due to damage caused by the recent flooding.

He further added that a sum of Rs 3,000 for completely damaged two-wheelers, Rs 10,000 for four-wheelers and Rs 5000 for autorickshaws should be provided. The amount could be credited to the customers’ bank accounts, he suggested.

People have lost consumer durables bought with their own resources. The nationalised banks should come forward to provide interest-free loans to the extent of Rs 1,00,000.

The Central government should also consider a subsidy of 25 per cent on this loan, he elaborated. He also demanded that farm loans should be waived completely.
