    A Press statement from Raj Bhavan said the recent rains battered Tamil Nadu, taking away the lives of hundreds of persons and causing heavy damage to property. This is the highest recorded rainfall in the past 100 years. Cuddalore, Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram Districts are the most affected Districts, he said. 

    Dr Rosaiah also also thanked Hon’ble President Pranab Mukherjee for his kind message and words of solace to the people of Tamil Nadu during this difficult time.

    He earlier spoke to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa after her aerial survey on Thursday. The Governor enquired with Chief Minister about the flood situation, the relief and rehabilitation measures taken up by the Government. 

    The Chief Minister informed the Governor about the evacuation of people from the flood affected areas using boats, helicopters and galvanizing the entire official machinery including Coast Guard, Armed Forces and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The Chief Minister stated that totally 3,548 revenue villages have been affected. 

    The extent of damage to crops in Tamil Nadu is estimated to be 92,476 hectares. She added that the vast stretches of roads estimated to be 14,410 kms including Highways, Chennai Corporation, Municipal and Town Panchayat roads have been damaged. There has been a heavy damage to electrical installations and distribution transformers due to which power supply has been affected in many areas. 

    The Governor praised the concerted efforts put in by all political parties, voluntary organizations, NGOs and private individuals. He commended the initiatives taken by the Tamil Nadu Government and all those who are associated in carrying out relief and rescue operations.
