Cinema has evolved but content is the key: Film producer Thyagarajan
Ajith’s Viswasam broke several box office records last year, when it released for the Pongal weekend. A year later, the movie has broken TRP records while it was recently aired on television.

The Siruthai Siva directorial has earned the top spot in the TRP chart on its third television premiere, with 16.12 million impressions.
Reports suggest that it is the highest TRP earned by a film in both the Tamil film industry and South Indian cinema, during this lockdown period. Talking about it to DT Next, the producer of the film Sathya Jyothi Thyagarajan said, “As a producer, you will have a gut feeling that it will be a blockbuster, even as you are listening to the script. One such script was Viswasam. When Siva narrated it to me, I knew that the good content will be backed by some brilliant performances from Ajith and Nayanthara. That’s what exactly happened.” Thyagarajan also heaped praise on Imman’s music in the film.
“When Imman gave us Kannana Kanney, I couldnt help recall my first film Moondraam Pirai’s Kanney Kalaimaane, which was composed by maestro Ilaiyaraja. I told my unit that this song would be accepted just like Kanne Kalaimaane for generations to come,” he added. Being an industry veteran of over four decades, Thyagarajan said that cinema has evolved by leaps and bounds. “Technically, cinema has changed a lot. However, be it the 80’s or 2020, content is the key. People will come to theatres, only when content is good. That is the reason why people still watch Baasha and Moondram Pirai even when it is aired today,” he told us.
He also said that theatres will still be the crucial player as far as movie industry is concerned. “We cannot make revenues or huge profits by selling content to OTT platforms. We need people to come and watch films in theatres to keep this business going. Also, there will be more films that will be made for theatrical experiences in the future,” he concluded. Thyagarajan is currently producing Dhanush- Ramkumar and Dhanush-Karthick Naren projects.
