Director’s love for coffee shops reflected in his films too

A quick walk down memory lane to some of the best romantic scenes written in Tamil cinema, and the first one would definitely be from Kaakha Kaakha in which Jyotika invites Suriya to have a cup of coffee with her at the nearest coffee shop.

Another memorable one is the coffee shop scene in Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya where Karthik and Jessie get into an argument, and finally there’s the Brew Room scene in Yennai Arindhaal where Ajith and Trisha meet each other. All these scenes have been scripted by Gautham Menon, and we hear that they all got visualised when the director sat in different coffee shops across the city. GVM is well known for his coffee shop affinity. In the late 2000s, the filmmaker used to frequent Amethyst in Royapettah (he still does on occasion), then he shifted his ‘office’ to Lloyd’s Tea House in Gopalapuram post2010. It was Brew Room coffee shop in SaveraHotel that inspired the scene in Yennai Arindhaal. His upcoming film Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta withDhanush and Megha Akash too is abouta couple, who meet at a coffee shop inLondon. Not to forget, the trailer of his film with Vikram Dhruva Natchathiram too wasshot in a coffee shop in New York. Now the director’s latest hangoutis the Starbucks outlet at ChamiersRoad, so does that mean we can expect more shop scenes in his next film Joshua, Imai Pol Kaaka?
