Post Rajini dig, Comali trailer creates a stir
Superstar Rajinikanth’s loyalists took to social media over the weekend after Jayam Ravi’s movie trailer took a funny jibe at the veteran actor’s political stance
Chennai
The trailer of Jayam Ravi’s upcoming film Comali was launched on Saturday. Though there were positive reviews on YouTube, Rajini fans on Twitter went on a rage against the people who promoted the trailer. The trailer ended by taking a dig at Rajini’s political entry with Jayam Ravi waking up from coma after 16 years and watching a clip from an event in which Rajini says, “I will enter politics” for which Jayam Ravi asks Yogi Babu which year we are in now. As Yogi Babu says its 2016, Jayam Ravi goes into a shock saying, “Hey you guys are trying to fool me. This is 1996.”
Director’s take
While this has offended Superstar’s fans, the director of the film Pradeep Ranganathan told DT Next, “This wasn’t included in the trailer to troll Rajini sir. This was just intended fun and wasn’t made to capitalise on his stardom. The film is a laugh riot, and this is one of those scenes where the audience will have a good laugh. We haven’t incorporated this scene in the film just for the sake of it. Moreover, there are other scenes like water crisis and flood-related issues that we have spoken about as well. That will be the bigger picture in Comali.”
For and against
Rajini fans also said that their support for Jayam Ravi’s films (well that includes his songs in their playlist too) will stop from now on and also took offence to celebs who tweeted in support of the trailer. Producer and film historian Dhananjayan who said that the trailer was a jolly ride was pulled up. When we contacted him, he said, “This is absolutely unhealthy for Tamil cinema.” Rajinikanth’s dear friend and actor-politician Kamal Haasan called up the producer of the film Ishari K Ganesh and has said that he couldn’t take the scene in a lighter vein and has added that he is disappointed. An actor-producer talking to us said that he had seen the trailer twice and there is nothing wrong about it. “Pulling up others to prove their loyalty is a bad culture. It is high time that fans stopped doing this for the good of the industry.” Produced by Vels Films International, Comali will hit the screens on August 15.
