    TN to promote its Rs 35k cr textile sector at Erode mega fair

    The state houses about 5.7 lakh powerlooms and 210 Powerloom Weavers Cooperative Societies covering 46,000 looms supporting nearly 11 lakh people through direct and indirect employment, said M Ponnuswami, Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu & CMD, Pon Pure Chemicals (I) (P) Ltd.

    He was speaking at an event to announce the launch of Weaves, a textile fair to be held in Erode over four days from December 5-8. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Texvalley – an Integrated textile market, will jointly organise the first edition of Weaves at Texvalley, the largest wholesale textile market in Erode. 

    The event will focus on promoting the powerlooms and the handloom industry and would feature more than 250 plus exhibitors from across the state showcasing their products.  The exhibitors will comprise stakeholders in processing and finishing, ethnic wear, knit fabric, handlooms, khadi, home textiles, accessories and machinery segments. 

    Tamil Nadu’s textile sector ranks third in the country after Maharashtra and Gujarat and its annual turnover is pegged at about Rs 35,000 cr. 

    “With about 20,000 manufacturing units running the productions with average of 20 looms, Weaves will be right platform for the weaving community in the Tamil Nadu to access to markets across the globe, said DP Kumar, Executive Director, Erode Textile Mall (P) Ltd (Texvalley). 

    Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts constitute nearly 80% of the power loom population, most of the operators produce fabrics on house cum workshed facilities basis and nearly 70% of weaving is done on job work basis. The sector supports the spinning industry largely and captive to value garment manufacturing in the country, said S Chandramohan, Vice Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu & President & Group CFO, TAFE Ltd.
