Google’s Neighbourly app now in Chennai
Google announced the expansion of Neighbourly, an new India-only app from its Next Billion Users team. The app helps people source local information from their neighbours. Having breached the 1.5 mn downloads mark, and with half a million people on the waitlist, the search engine giant is rolling out Neighbourly nationwide.
Chennai
The app was unveiled to Chennai after users in Bengaluru and Delhi were on boarded earlier this week. More cities will be added every day, including Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Indore.
The app is available on the Google Play Store. Ben Fohner, Sr Product Manager, on Google’s Next Billion Users team said, “We conducted research in neighbourhoods across Chennai, including in Adyar, Shenoy Nagar, T Nagar, Kilpauk, and Egmore. From single bachelors to joint families, we observed that Chennaiites love to garner information from their community. Most of them are looking at discovering more ways to conduct pujas, solutions for power cuts, local train timings, and such information.”
“We want to fill the hyper-local information gap that exists today. Most of life happens within a 1 km radius of where you live. When finding local data, people prefer to ask or discuss with another person. The app makes it easy to seek advice and recommendations from neighbours who know the area and have similar tastes.”
