‘Tamil Nadu, a shining example of apprenticeship nationally’
Tamil Nadu is among the top 3 states (Maharashtra and Karnataka, being the other two) when it comes to absorption of fees-based courses for apprenticeship. More than 7.08 lakh candidates have been trained so far of which 4 lakh candidates have been placed (FY 2014-15 to FY 2018-19), a top NSDC official has revealed.

The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in collaboration with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and GIZ hosted and Apprenticeship Connect Workshop in Chennai on Tuesday. The workshop, part of the Skill Connect Road Show series, introduced new industry-savvy reforms in Apprenticeship regime. The workshops are intended to raise awareness about the reforms in the Apprenticeship laws in India making them friendly to facilitate the Industry (including service sector) to come forward and design its own courses as per their requirements to create an industry-ready skill force.
Manish Kumar, MD & CEO, says, “The roadshows are being held to promote the value of apprenticeship in more than 20 cities. Until now, the concept of apprenticeship was highly regulated. Now the powers have been delegated to the industry. CII and such organisations or industry chambers will work as third-party aggregators when it comes to apprenticeship programmes.”
He adds, “The big shift is from the manufacturing towards the tertiary sector or services. We have seen how a 3-month skilling apprenticeship is resulting in a 24 per cent wage jump in candidates. A portal has also been introduced to execute the apprenticeship process digitally and in a transparent manner. The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme ensures financial support to companies from the Government as well.”
