Rs 2,000 crore investment for logistics growth
The VO Chidambaranar Port at Thoothukudi plans to invest Rs 2,000 crore to increase the draft in the port to facilitate entry of larger vessels to boost logistics growth, said S Anantha Chandra Bose, Chairman, VOC Port Trust.

At the sixth edition of a logistics conference organised by the CII and Sterlite Copper at Thoothukudi, he said many initiatives had been undertaken to bring down the cost of logistics and the turnaround time of ships. The port is investing around Rs 2,000 crore to increase the draft from 12.8 to 14.5 meters and the environment clearance for the project is awaited.Â
He also said there were several new projects being planned under the Sagarmala project including the construction of a truck terminal with all the necessary facilities for parking and providing basic facilities to truck drivers, building an exclusive coastal berth, setting up a free trade zone kind of setup for cotton re-export.Â
N Subramanian, Director, Thoothukudi Airport, said out of 600 acres of land to be acquired, 410 acres of land had been done and the allocation of compensation fund by the state government had also been completed. Once the land acquisition process is over, the airport expansion will be taken up. The project when completed, would increase logistics movement thereafter.
