CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted heavy rain along with thunderstorm activity for five districts of Tamil Nadu for the next two days due to the prevalence of a low-pressure area over the South Odisha region.

“The low-pressure area formed over the Andhra coast and adjacent Bay of Bengal region has strengthened into a deep depression and is prevailing over South Odisha. It is likely to weaken into a depression in the next 24 hours. So, five districts of Tamil Nadu - The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, and Dindigul - are likely to get heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning for the next two days,” said an RMC official. The rest of the State is expected to receive light to moderate rain. In Chennai, the sky will be partly cloudy and some areas will receive light rain during the evening hours.

Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea till Wednesday as squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph is likely to prevail over the Gulf of Mannar, south TN coast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast.

A weather blogger stated, “Strengthening monsoon dynamics likely to bring moderate to heavy rains over many places in the Western Ghats while fast-moving thunderstorms could bring a sudden burst of showers in one or two places over northern parts of TN, but overall subdued rains likely for most of the districts.”

According to RMC, during the last 24 hours, the highest amount of rainfall recorded in the Nilgiris was 14 cm, Coimbatore 7 cm, and Salem and Theni one cm each.
