C Biju, a Hindu Munnani functionary from Gokhale Street near Ram Nagar, was hacked to death by a seven-member gang on Sunday, when he was at his shop. Though he tried to escape, the gang chased and attacked him. He later died without responding to treatment at CMCH. Trouble arose after Biju tried to settle a dispute between two groups resulting in his murder. On Saturday, two persons had stabbed A Nitish Kumar, 20 on his abdomen and he was hospitalised. In a retaliatory attack, police said that Kumar’s friends murdered Biju as he intervened in their issue. Kumar’s family members had also lodged a complaint against few persons including Biju. Police sources said that seven members of the gang have been secured on Monday evening and further inquiries are on with them.

Meanwhile mild tension prevailed at the CMCH, where the body of the deceased was kept as a large number of Hindu Munnani activists poured in to pay their last rites. Earlier more than 100 persons in two-wheelers turned up to take the body of the deceased on a procession to the crematorium in Pappanaickenpalayam. They broke into an argument, when police stopped them resulting in minor tension.
