Smuggling of beedis foiled, 3 held

Three fishermen of Thoothukudi were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy for smuggling kilos of beedi leaves, sources said on Thursday. While the Lankan Navy personnel were engaged in a sea patrolling, the boat of the fishermen from Thoothukudi who ventured into the sea on November 11, was intercepted as the boat had been moving in a suspicious manner.

After a search on the boat, the SL personnel seized thousand kilos of dried beedi leaves stuffed in gunny bags along with the boat. The personnel then handed over the contraband to the Colombo Customs authorities for further inquiry.
