CHENNAI: Three-time Asian Games medallist and Arjuna awardee, goalkeeper Savita Punia could call time on her career next year after the Asian Games in Japan.
The double Olympian, often referred to as the Great Wall of India, made her international debut in 2011 at the age of 20.
“I was contemplating this decision in 2024 when the women’s team failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics, but I didn’t want to rush my decision based on how I felt at that moment.
A year later, I might have regretted it, so I decided to continue playing. My next aim is to win the gold at the Asian Games 2026,” Savita said, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a hockey clinic for children in Chennai.
A gold medal at the Asian Games would seal qualification for the 2028 Olympics. When asked whether that possibility might convince her to delay retirement for one last Olympic campaign, Savita admitted that it could influence her decision.
“If not on the field, I will always remain connected to the sport in some way or the other, contributing from the sidelines,” she said.
The seasoned goalkeeper underwent ankle surgery in September and will be playing her first match after nearly six months on the sidelines.
She completed her rehabilitation at the Inspire Institute of Sports, which continued to support and retain her even while she was away from competitive action.
Savita added that the upcoming Hockey India League season will play a key role in helping Indian players prepare for the Hockey World Cup qualifiers.
