Celebrity TV host Ellen DeGeneres has revealed that the star-studded Oscars selfie that almost broke the internet — and definitely crashed Twitter — was actually the result of another joke going wrong.

The famous snap, which has been retweeted over three million times, was taken on Ellen’s phone by Bradley Cooper back at the 2014 Academy Awards, and included stars such as Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and Kevin Spacey.

Ellen, 58, said the selfie was actually another joke that had gone somewhat awry, as she had originally planned a skit where she and Streep would have a picture taken together.
