TIRUCHY: Thanjavur Court on Wednesday awarded 30 years of imprisonment to a youth for sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl. In 2020, Muthu (31), a construction worker from Kulathuvelpatti in Sivaganga district came to Peravurani to visit his relatives.

During his stay for a few days, Muthu met a 15-year-old girl residing in the neighbouring house and used to talk to her frequently. On the particular day of the incident, Muthu had taken the girl to a secluded place and sexually abused her. Meanwhile, the girl’s parents found her unusually tired, inquired about the girl and she narrated the incident to them.

Subsequently, the parents lodged a complaint with the Peravurani police who registered a case under various IPC sections, including Pocso Act and arrested Muthu. The case was in progress at the Thanjavur Mahila Court and on Wednesday, the judge G Sundrarajan who heard the case, awarded 30 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000 to Muthu. The judge also recommended the government to distribute a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the victim.
