Though it was decided to establish an airport in the Vellore, initially there was no clarity on the cities to which flight services would be operated from the Fort City. After much deliberations, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation fixed that Chennai-Vellore-Bangalore route 

in both the directions. 

Amidst these developments, the district administration handed over 55 acres to Airports Authority of India and submitted a plan for approach roads on both sides of the airport as the Asanambut road would be blocked because of the new facility, officials said. Officials part of the survey work told DT Next that as the old runway was not in a usable condition, a new 800-metre runway was proposed at an average height of six feet that could be used by 20-seater aircraft. 

The runway work was expected to be completed by January. After this, the civil work including the construction of waiting halls and offices would be commenced and completed in three months. On Friday, machines were deployed to clear the bushes and plants. Once this process was done, the levelling of land near the old runway would be carried out to pave the way for other development works at the site.
