Will move High Court, says Karti

A day after a special court in Chennai refused to discharge him and family in a case of alleged tax evasion, Lok Sabha member and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram said he would move the Madras High Court in this regard.

He claimed there was no cash involved when he and wife sold a piece of land in 2015-16, a transaction that led to the tax evasion case against him and wife Srinidhi. On Tuesday, the special court for trial of criminal cases against Members of Parliament and Assembly dismissed a discharge petition that the couple had filed.

“The Income Tax department’s complaint was based on a notice of reassessment. The I-T department’s reassessment proceedings abated on December 31, 2019,” said a statement issued on behalf of Karti and Srinidhi by their advocate NRR Arun Natrajan on Wednesday. “No order of assessment or demand was passed. The complaint is therefore honest in law. We will bring this fact to the notice of the trial court and move the Madras High Court against the order,” it added.

“The entire proceeds have been accounted for and reflected in the books of account and returns filed,” their advocate said, dismissing the I-T department’s claims.
