Vellore: In a bid to slake the thirst of forest animals, the Vellore Forest Department plans to fill cement troughs with water, officials revealed.

Official sources said that water troughs presently located in 7 spots, including Katpadi, Latheri, Anaicut, Gudiyattam, Sholavaram and Panamadangi would be filled with 5,000 litres once in three days.

Asked about locations where elephant herds or even single pachyderms entered the Gudiyattam area in Vellore from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh destroying standing crops, officials said, “Trenches of 10 metres long and 2 metres deep with the capacity to hold 10,000 litres of water are now being constructed near Katpadi and at Paradarami near Guidyattam.”
