Addressing an event held recently at the Horticultural College and Research Institute in Theni district’s Periyakulam, Kumar said the TNAU has released high-yielding mango varieties namely PKM 1, PKM 2, Paiyur-1.

“We have also developed techniques on high and ultra-high-density planting system, drip fertigation methods, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM) methods,” he said, adding that their new research is focussed on root stock tolerance to drought, saline and alkaline condition, pre and post-harvest studies, packaging, supply chain management and export potential.

“Mango growers in Tamil Nadu, industries and entrepreneurs should come forward to use the research findings to increase production and productivity,” Kumar said.

According to him, the country has exported 49180.48 metric tonnes of fresh mangoes worth Rs 382.34 crore to countries overseas during 2017-18. “There is a great demand for Indian mangoes and processed mango products such as mango pulp, pickle, chutney and juice in domestic and international markets,” he said.

Stating that mango is considered a traditional, holistic and commercially viable fruit crop in Tamil Nadu, Kumar said the cultivation area in the State was increasing tremendously year by year due to favourable climatic conditions.
