Two arrested in Ponnamarvathi video clip case

Police arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in spreading the video clip that sparked communal riots at Ponnamaravathi in Pudukkottai district.

According to Inspector General (Central Zone) V Varadharaju, the video which was derogatory towards women from a particular community was spread with an intent to consolidate votes in Thanjavur Lok Sabha constituency. “However, it misfired, and the effects were seen at Ponnamaravathi, which falls under the Sivaganga LS constituency.”


G Selvakumar (34), who was working in Singapore, was arrested when he returned to Thanjavur via Chennai. “The video was shot in Singapore by Selvakumar on the advice of C Vasanth (30), who hails from Pattukkottai,” Varadharaju said.


In the video which was shot in poor light, two men can be heard speaking ill about women belonging to the Mutharaiyar community. Significantly, the duo belonged to the same community and had falsely identify themselves as members of another community.
