AS the counting process is underway, a close battle continues between VCK leader Thirumavalavan and AIADMK's P Chandrasekar. While Thirumavalavan has got 1,40,898 votes, AIADMK candidate has received 1,44,286 votes

While the AIADMK has fielded P Chandrasekar, the DMK front has allotted the seat to the VCK. TTV Dhinakaran’s AMMK has selected A Elavarasan as its candidate.

Chidambaram has recorded 98.43% turnout.

In this constituency, where areas of three districts fall, caste factor plays a major game. With Dalits and Vanniyars almost in equal numbers in this region, there have been instances of communal clashes in the past. The PMK, which is strongly backed by the Vanniyar community, is part of the AIADMK-led alliance in this poll. In 2014, the AIADMK candidate M Chandrakasi (4.29 lakh votes) defeated Thirumavalavan (3.01 lakh votes) by a massive margin. The VCK leader, however, romped home in this seat in 2009 general elections.
