DMK worker held for assault, death of toddler

COIMBATORE: A DMK youth wing functionary was arrested in Krishnagiri on Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a two-and-a-half-year-old girl in December last year, resulting in her death.

Police said Perianayagam (40) from Jesurajapuram, who had a relationship with a 24-year-old woman separated from her husband, allegedly assaulted the child while she was alone.

The child was taken to a private hospital on December 11, with the woman claiming a sudden epileptic attack, but doctors confirmed she had already died. The Anjetty Police registered a case of suspicious death, and a post-mortem revealed internal injuries consistent with sexual assault.

Following further investigation, Perianayagam was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012.

He was produced in court and remanded to Dharmapuri Sub-Jail, with police continuing their inquiry.
