CHENNAI: The BJP-led Union government has written to the Tamil Nadu government, seeking its opinion on the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal.

According to sources, the state Home Department is preparing an appropriate reply in consultation with Chief Minister MK Stalin.

The central government is planning to implement the 'One Nation, One Election' system across the country. A committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind was constituted to examine the feasibility and suggest a framework for conducting simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha, state Assemblies, and local bodies.

After receiving the committee's suggestions, the Centre tabled a Bill in both Houses of Parliament. However, following strong objections from opposition parties, the Bill was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin has been opposing the Centre's move. Speaking at the party's diamond jubilee conference held in Kanchipuram, he accused the BJP government at the Centre of attempting to reduce States to Union Territories.

He said the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal was aimed at suppressing the rights of States and transforming India into a unitary system of governance.

However, considering all aspects, the Union government decided to seek the opinions of State governments and accordingly sent letters to all States.

"The Law Department received the Union government's letter on the 'One Nation, One Election' issue. It has been forwarded to the Home Department, and a decision will be made in consultation with the chief minister," a government official said.

The State government is expected to send its response at the earliest.
