Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami's mother Tavasaayi Ammal (93) passed away on the wee hours of Tuesday.

She suffered a cardiac arrest at 1 AM in a private hospital in Salem. She was admitted to get treated for age-related ailments, but the treatments could not get her back.

CM had rushed to Salem on road and had striked off all his schedule from itinerary. 

On reaching his home, Palaniswami was moved to tears and paid his last respects to his mother. As per customs, his elder brother K Govindarajan performed the last rites, government sources said.

In a procession, the body was taken in a hearse decked with flowers and garlands to the village burial ground and cremated. On Tuesday morning, her body was cremated at her native village.

Apart from Palaniswami, Tavasaayi Ammal is also survived by son Govindraj and daughter Vijayalakshmi.

The Chief Minister's father V Karuppa Gounder passed away in 2004.
