CHENNAI: After a protracted delay, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Sunday approved the appointment of new presidents for the district Congress committees in Tamil Nadu, with immediate effect, as part of the party's organisational restructuring ahead of the key Assembly election.

The Congress president has given approval for the appointment of district unit presidents, the AICC announced in a press release issued on Sunday.

The appointments have been made under the party's nationwide organisational revamp initiative, Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, aimed at strengthening the Congress at the grassroots level.

As part of this exercise, AICC observers were assigned to each district to conduct detailed reviews, interact with party functionaries, and assess organisational performance.

Based on the comprehensive reports submitted by the observers and subsequent one-to-one discussions with senior party leadership, the new DCC presidents have been finalised, the party said. The AICC said the appointments will take effect immediately.

The move is seen as a step towards energising the party cadre in Tamil Nadu and preparing the organisation for the upcoming electoral battles, including the 2026 Assembly elections.
