CHENNAI: A couple from Pollachi, who were on the way to a temple in view of their Sashtiapthapoorthi, were crushed to death while members of their family sustained injuries as the car they were travelling was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry in Thanjavur on Friday.
It is said that the couple Subramani (60) and Kalavathi (56) from Kumaran Nagar in Pollachi in Coimbatore, along with their son Rakesh (35) and daughter-in-law Rajeswari (28), were proceeding to Tirukadayur Sri Amirthagteshwarar temple in Mayiladuthurai in a car and Asthar Ali (46), also from Pollachi, was driving the car.
On Friday early hours, when their car was nearing Narasimganpettai near Kumbakonam, the car collided with a coconut-laden lorry. Subramani and Kalavathi died on the spot, while Rakesh, Rajeswari and driver Asthar Ali sustained severe injuries.
The passersby rescued the injured and sent them to the Kumbakonam GH.
On information, Tiruneelakudi police rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies. The police also registered a case and arrested Mari Durai (49) from Tenkasi. Further investigations are on.
