Cadres of several parties, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) led by its president Thol Thirumavalavan, the Puthiya Tamilagam led by its president K Krishnaswamy, and the Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam led by its leader John Pandian, paid floral tributes to the victims.
A silent procession was taken out from Vannarapettai to Kokkirakulam where the victims drowned. Cadres of Congress, BJP, CPI, CPM and a few other outfits also paid homage to the victims on the occasion. While talking to reporters, Krishnaswamy said the State government should provide land for building a memorial to the victims.
Commenting on the recent sexual abuse of a minor girl, he said it was due to gross misuse of the social media, which should be brought under strict regulation and control. False rumours were being spread on social media and Tamil Nadu will be ruined if regulatory measures are not taken, he added. Thol Thirumavalavan claimed that unlike previous years, the police had not even permitted to paste wall posters in memory of the ‘Tamirabarani tragedy’ victims this time. Referring to the general elections next year, he said the VCK would support the coalition, which forms a secular government at the Centre.
