CHENNAI: Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday inaugurated the World Tamil Diaspora Day–2026 celebrations in Chennai, asserting that the diaspora has played a decisive role in elevating Tamil Nadu's global standing and economic strength through its enduring bond with the language and culture.

Inaugurating the event at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam, Udhayanidhi said the theme, "Tamizhal Inaivom, Dharaniyil Uyarvom" captured the spirit of a global community that had remained rooted in its mother tongue while excelling across continents. "Tamil does not divide people by caste, religion, wealth or gender. It binds us beyond all differences. It is because we are united by Tamil that we have today conquered the world," he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister also underlined the State's outreach to Non-Resident Tamils, noting that nearly 32,000 members are now registered with the Non-Resident Tamils Welfare Board. "The identity card issued by the Board is your 'thaai veettu seethanam', a symbol of the bond between you and Tamil Nadu," he said.

Udhayanidhi said Chief Minister M K Stalin's overseas visits were aimed at strengthening economic ties with the diaspora. "Tamil Nadu is today India's number one state in terms of economy. Your contribution to this growth is significant," he told the gathering, urging expatriate Tamils to share their ideas under the State's 'Unga Kanava Sollunga' initiative.

Canadian MP Juanita Nathan said the event gives global recognition to Tamils and thanked the Tamil Nadu government for its support in establishing a Tamil chair at the University of Toronto.
