CHENNAI: Traffic woes on Rajiv Gandhi Road (OMR) in Taramani may ease as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the unidirectional 'U' shaped flyover near Indira Nagar MRTS station on Thursday.

According to a Highways Department release, the flyover has been constructed at Rs. 18.15 crore. The 237-meter-long flyover will allow vehicles coming from Sholinganallur (SRP Tools Junction) to take a U-turn towards Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur through Indira Nagar.

"Vehicles are forced to wait for 20 minutes to 30 minutes at the Indira Nagar signal and Tidel Park signal causing heavy traffic snarls on Rajiv Gandhi Road. To resolve the issue permanently, a decision was taken to construct 'U' shaped flyovers at both the junctions," the release said.

Following the decision, the State government gave administrative sanction for Rs. 108.13 crore to construct two 'U' shaped flyovers and improve traffic infrastructures.

As the flyover has been inaugurated at Indira Nagar, vehicles towards Tiruvanmiyur from SRP tools junction will not be allowed to take a right turn either at the Tidel Park signal or Indira Nagar junction. Instead, they will have to use the new flyover to make a U-turn and turn left either at Indira Nagar Second Avenue or East Coast Road to reach Tiruvanmiyur.

Since the construction of one of the two flyovers is completed, work at the Tidel Park signal flyover is expected to be completed soon.
