Schoolteacher suspended for harassing girls

R Ravichandran (57), a science teacher in the Government High School at Barali Power House near Karamadai, has been suspended on charges of sexually abusing girl students from the nearby tribal settlements.

The Chief Education Officer of Coimbatore district took the step after staff members attached to the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) submitted their inqiry report after meeting the other teachers, students, girls who dropped out of the school and their parents. Ravichandran’s mischiefs came to light a few weeks ago after the school’s strength from Class 6 to 10 suddenly dropped to a low 47. During the inquiry, the students, most of whom are first-generation schoolgoers from tribal hamlets Pillur Dam, Varakkad, Jabaikadu, Nellithurai, reportedly said that they were shocked by the treatment they received from Ravichandran. The DEO K Thenmozhi said that on completion of a formal inquiry, further action will be initiated.
