In a Whatsapp message, Bedi said, World Fisheries Day was celebrated every year on November 21 throughout the world byfisherfolk communities.

The World Fisheries Day helps in highlighting the critical importance to human lives, of water and the lives it sustains, both in and out of water. Water forms a continuum, whether contained in rivers, lakes and oceans, she said.

At a time when the fresh waterbodies are in the danger of getting destroyed or polluted and coasts are under increased vulnerability, there is a need for an all-out effort to protect them and the fisheries sector, she said.

The Lt Governor exhorted all to work together to protect the water system and the eco-system service that they generate including fisheries.

Bedi said she most vividly recall the picture of fishermen saving human lives at time of flood in Kerala in the recent past. She urged the youths and families of fishermen to engage in water sports as they are like fish to water and no one understands the ocean more than them. Their women may collaborate with NGOs for enhanced literacy and skills program which shall increase the quality of their life, she added.
