CHENNAI: PMK member Sowmiya Anbumani has urged the State government to introduce incentives for parents who name their newborns in Tamil, similar to the "Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothiram" scheme for babies born in government hospitals, stating that such initiatives would encourage the use and preservation of the Tamil language.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat campus, Sowmiya welcomed Chief Minister Vijay's announcements made under Rule 110 to drop the Parandur airport project.

Responding to questions on the welfare schemes announced by the Chief Minister, she said the PMK would support freebies and welfare measures that are essential for the people, particularly those related to healthcare, education and agriculture.

She also welcomed the free bus travel scheme for women, stating that it would help empower women across the State by improving their access to education, employment and other opportunities.

On environmental issues, she urged the government to take steps to protect water bodies across the State.

She alleged that several water bodies were being polluted due to inadequate sewage management and said local bodies should strengthen their sewage and waste management systems.

The government must ensure that sewage is not discharged into water bodies and should closely monitor waste management systems, she said, stressing that protecting water resources was essential for ensuring a healthy environment for future generations.
