Rejected by relatives, couple commits suicide

A couple, dejected over the stiff opposition from their respective families against their marriage, committed suicide near Arni here on Friday night, sources said.

According to the police, Devarajan (22) and Gayathri (19), both residents of Kunthavazhur in Andhra Pradesh, eloped and married five months ago despite opposition from their families. The couple then settled down in Bengaluru.

However, the couple recently came to the house of Devarajan’s aunt in Arni to celebrate Pongal. When the couple reached Samathuvapuram in Arni taluk, the families continued to express their disapproval over the union. Dejected by this, the couple committed suicide by hanging from a tree in front of the house on Friday. Based on the information, the Kalambur police sent the bodies to Arni GH for post-mortem. Investigations are on.
