Most churches in and around the city saw families gather to participate in the worship service, and also to take out to a procession. At one such event held near the Sacred Heart Church on Pantheon Road, hundreds of devotees gathered in a procession up to Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar statue and back, symbolising the journey of Christ to Golgotha where he was crucified. Similar processions were held in many churches across the city.

In the Union Territory of Puducherry too, special mass was conducted in churches to mark the occasion. Archbishop of Puducherry and Cuddalore Rev Antony Anandarayar also led a mass at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. The procession went through the main thoroughfares of the town and returned to the cathedral. The believers also observed fasting through the day and spent time offering prayers.
