Police seize tobacco products worth Rs 20 lakh smuggled into Salem

The Salem police seized 20 lakh worth banned tobacco products smuggled in a lorry from Delhi and arrested its driver on Wednesday early morning.

Based on a tip off, Salem City Police Commissioner Senthil Kumar deputed multiple teams to carry out vehicle checks. A police team led by Annadanapatty Inspector Saravanan managed to intercept a speeding lorry on Seelanaickenpatty bypass road. A check revealed that there were rice bags on the top and huge bags of tobacco products beneath. Police arrested one of the lorry drivers Prakash from Attur in Salem, while the other person managed to flee away. Inquiries revealed that they have planned to take the tobacco products to Erode and then to Tirunelveli district. A case has been registered. Further investigations are on.
