Police attack on Dalit pregnant woman: SHRC seeks report 

State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) had taken suo moto action in the incident where a Dalit pregnant woman was attacked by policemen, in Sivaganga district.

According to SHRC, the commission had demanded report from the police on the Dalit pregnant woman attack case and the action taken on the incident against the policemen. SHRC has also condemned the attack by Sivaganga police.


The incident happened on June 14 when an eight-month pregnant woman Chitra from Muniyandipuram village in Sivaganga district was attacked by policemen when she tried to stop them from hitting her husband Kaliswaran.


According to A Kathir, Executive Director, Evidence, the incident happened during a temple festival and a group of Dalit youth were cheering by sitting on top of a building. Police scolded them and when they tried to attack them, Kaliswaran questioned the policemen and the police started attacking Kaliswaran.
