One Nation One Election row: Instead of imposing egoistic ideas bound to fail, address pressing issues, says Stalin

DMK president terms the move diversionary and asks the Centre to focus on issues such as unemployment and price rise

CHENNAI: Reiterating his opposition to the ‘impractical’ and ‘unfeasible’ proposal of the BJP-led NDA government to conduct simultaneous polls across the nation, Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin called upon the Union government to address pressing issues such as unemployment, price rise and issues in equitable distribution of resources to the states.

Stalin appealed to the Centre not to spend its energy on ‘diversionary tactics’ such as the ‘one nation one election’ policy.

Terming ‘one Nation, one election’ an impractical proposition ignoring the complexities of India's diverse electoral system, the CM said the move undermines the federal structure imbibed in the Constitution. “What the Union government proposes is logistically not feasible, given the vast differences in election cycles, regional issues, and governance priorities. It will require an unrealistic alignment of all terms of office, disrupting the natural course of governance,” Stalin added

Registering his staunch opposition to the idea in the backdrop of the union government accepting the recommendation of the high-level committee headed by former president Ram Nath Govind to conduct simultaneous elections, the DMK president called upon the BJP government not to fall for an egoistic trip.

“This entire proposal is simply a move to satisfy the BJP's ego. But they will never be able to implement it. India's democracy cannot be bent to suit the greed of one party,” Stalin said, slamming the BJP for imposing its idea on the nation.
