Madurai
At a previous court hearing in Srivilliputhur on November 18, the Mahila Court Judge Parimala had issued an arrest warrant against Devi, after she failed to appear in the court. Based on the warrant issued, the CB-CID personnel arrested Devi and took her to the Mahila Court amidst tight security. Devi shed tears while she was moving out from the court premises, sources said.
Devi was arrested by Aruppukkottai Town police on April 16 last year on charges of allegedly luring girl students to extend favours to senior officials of the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) in return for higher marks.
Ahead of her arrest, an audio clip of her purported conversation with a few students had gone viral on social media.
The CB-CID filed a chargesheet in the case months after the arrest of other accused, including V. Murugan, assistant professor, formerly with the MKU, and S. Karuppasamy, former research scholar of the university, in the case.
However, Devi was granted bail by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on March 12 this year, nearly after 11 months of imprisonment.
Pasumpon Pandian, legal counsel for Devi, said an AIADMK Minister from Madurai had threatened the life of her client Devi and that of her family, if she continued to appear for hearing in the case.
Further, Devi was intimidated by the Minister that her children would be kidnapped and he also threatened to throw acid on her face, Pandian told reporters at Srivilliputhur.
When Devi contacted him over phone on Sunday night, she was asked to surrender before the court in Srivilliputhur at 9 am on Monday. But, it was shocking that the CB-CID produced her, claiming that she was arrested.
On the Minister, who allegedly threatened Devi, he gave a description that the Minister had a beard often in almost half of the year and looked ordinary in the rest of the year.
